Are you looking to buy a vacation house in upstate New York? You may want to consider Ithaca, a city on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region that’s home to Cornell University and Ithaca College. It has a walkable downtown area plus over 150 waterfalls (called gorges) and popular trails to hike.

Downtown, there’s Ithaca Commons, a shopping district where you’ll find The Dewitt Mall, shops like Benjamin Peters and Home Green Home plus Restaurant Row where you can dine at restaurants like Mercato Bar & Kitchen and Simeon’s. And for a dose of culture, there's the State Theater, Johnson Museum of Art, and Museum of the Earth.

To enjoy the great outdoors, there’s Cayuga Lake, which you can access by boat at Allan H. Treman State Marine Park and for swimming check out nearby Myers Park. You can also head to other parks in the area like Stewart Park and Buttermilk Falls State Park. And there’s Ithaca Tompkins International Airport for getting out of town.

When it comes to buying a house here, the median sales price is $411,300, according to Realtor.com. Right now there are about 50 listings, including some houses close to downtown and some farther out in more suburban areas.
