If your dream is to live in a house, there are lots of arguments you could make for renting a house in New York City instead of following a more traditional plan of saving up and buying in the suburbs. It's a shortcut to getting the benefits of more space and privacy—while living close to what NYC has to offer.

And it makes sense in the current sales market, which is putting homeownership out of reach for many New Yorkers as a result of rising prices, higher mortgage rates, and low inventory in the suburbs. Plus property taxes there are generally much higher than in the city.

You can find a variety of single-family houses in NYC including suburban-style detached houses with driveways and backyards plus townhouses and row houses, where you share a wall with your neighbors, but still get the perks of having an entire place to yourself, including private outdoor space and a washer and dryer of your own. You can find these houses across the city, but the more affordable options are most likely to be found in Brooklyn and Queens.

So if you’re looking to rent a house in the city, check out these five single-family rentals in Jamaica, Bushwick, Bay Ridge, Forest Hills, and Prospect Lefferts Gardens.
