Are you looking for a cheap apartment to rent in New York City? It's a major challenge these days because rents are steep in all five boroughs—but there are some neighborhoods that are more affordable than others.

To pinpoint these areas, Brick Underground partnered with RentHop to round up the neighborhoods with the lowest median rent for a one bedroom. So if you're apartment hunting in Manhattan, head to Inwood, where the median rent for a one bedroom is $1,950. In Brooklyn, the most affordable neighborhood is Gravesend, where the median rent for a one bedroom is $1,695; and in Queens, Woodhaven is the most affordable with a median rent of $1,700 for a one bedroom.

Keep in mind that the farther you move from Midtown Manhattan, the more likely you are to get a good deal. You may have a longer commute if your work in Manhattan, but many of these areas, like Woodhaven, for example, have plenty of transportation options and far-flung nabes like Bath Beach have the perk of being on the waterfront.

To help with your budget-friendly apartment search, here are five apartments for rent around $2,000 a month in Inwood, Washington Heights, Parkchester, Middle Village, and Bath Beach.
