Stone Ridge, New York, an Ulster County hamlet, is known for its historic houses, farm stands, antique shops, and outdoor activities. There’s also Main Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, where you can spend the night at Wynkoop House, a hotel that George Washington stayed in back in 1782.

The historic area is centrally located in the Hudson Valley and is just over two hours from New York City, making it ideal for weekend getaways, says Pelle Hamburger, co-founder of NevelHaus, who is developing eight, custom-built homes on 44 acres in Stone Ridge, where lots start at $1,595,000. You can also find other lots for sale if you’re interested in a building your own weekend house.

When it comes to buying a house here, the median sales price is $440,000 according to Realtor.com. But most of what you’ll find on the market now are million dollar-plus houses with acres of land, pools, guest houses, and barns. Right now there are just under 20 houses for sale in the area.
