This three-bedroom, two-bath Victorian in Marlboro is listed for $650,000.

Douglas Elliman Real Estate/Zillow

Ulster County, New York, is home to popular destinations for New Yorkers like Kingston, New Paltz, and Woodstock—places where you get the benefits of living in Hudson Valley—plus you’re just a few hours drive from New York City.

That popularity has enticed buyers looking for houses outside the city during the pandemic and helped fuel a 20 percent increase in the median sales price of single-family houses in Ulster, which is now $349,000, The Real Deal reports.

Still buying a house is cheaper here than in areas like Westchester County, and of course, New York City. So if you’re looking for a house in the area and don’t have to live in a specific area, you have options that don't involve breaking the bank. Currently there are 277 houses across Ulster County for less than $1,000,000 listed on Zillow.

If you’re not familiar with Ulster County, it’s ideal for both outdoorsy and artsy types. You have access to the Hudson River, the Catskills, and plenty of parks and nature reserves. Many of the more popular towns and cities also have thriving arts and dining scenes. You’ll probably need a car to live here so you can easily drive to NYC, but depending on where you land, there are bus and train options too.

So if you’re looking for a house in Ulster County, check out these five places in Shawangunk, Marlboro, Mt. Tremper, Kingston, and West Hurley for less than $1,000,000.
