The city of Kingston, New York, is a good place to consider moving if you like the Hudson Valley region but want a small city that’s a little more diverse. The New York Times notes that in “the overwhelmingly white Hudson Valley, Kingston is nearly 70 percent white” with the rest a mix of Black, Latino, Asian, Indigenous American and other non-white groups.

Other notable attributes include a walkable downtown, access to nature, and it’s just a two-hour drive from NYC. There’s also lot of history in this former Dutch colony: It was once the capital of New York and where the state’s constitution was signed in 1777; the British burned the city that same year.

You can also buy a house here for less than areas closer to the city: The current median sales price is $290,000, according to Realtor.com. Here you’ll find Victorians, Colonials, and Craftsman-style houses, either downtown if you want a walkable neighborhood and farther out if you want more of a suburban vibe.

For things to do, there’s the Kingston Uptown Historic District, The Forsyth Nature Center, and Hudson River Maritime Museum. For dining there are local spots like Deising’s, Savona’s, Boitson’s, and Front Street Tavern and for shopping, you can find a mix of local businesses and big-box stores plus the Hudson Valley Mall.

So if Kingston sounds like a fit, check out these five houses for sale in the area.
