Beacon, New York, has long been one of my favorite quick getaways from the city for many reasons: It’s easy to get to via MetroNorth, for starters—and you can visit Dia:Beacon (a contemporary art museum located in a former Nabsico box-printing factory). There are also many locally owned eateries along Main Street (check out Homespun Foods and Max’s on Main), and of course views of the Hudson River.

All of this makes it a good place to move if you’re done with city life but want to be nearby—and not give up cultural amenities. You’ll also find art galleries like Fridman Gallery (they have a location in NYC too), waterfront parks, breweries, and local stores like Alps Sweet Shop (a must-try if you’re a chocoholic). Poughkeepsie, where you’ll find malls and chains like Target, is also only about a 30-minute drive from here.

When it comes to buying a house here, the current median sales price is $420,000, according to Realtor.com. There are about 50 listings on the market now, including houses within walking distance of Main Street (and the MetroNorth station) and some farther out in more rural areas.

Sound like a fit? Check out these five places for sale in the area including an 1880 house with its original beams and staircase.
