Woodstock, New York, in the Catskills, offers access to art, culture, nature, and popular eateries—making it a good place to relocate if you want to move somewhere with more space and privacy, without giving up too many city amenities.

The town is most recognizable for lending its name to the Woodstock Music Festival, which actually took place in Bethel, NY. The town has long been a haven for artists and musicians, and is home to Byrdcliffe Art Colony, Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, and there’s even an artists cemetery. Bob Dylan once lived here and it still attracts artists today.

Lindsay Barton Barrett, a broker at Douglas Elliman based in Brooklyn, bought a house in Woodstock earlier this year. She says the area is appealing to many New Yorkers who appreciate that the area’s restaurants, arts, theater, and services are within a quick drive.

Tinker Street is the main hub of Woodstock, where you’ll find eateries and stores like Shindig, Oriole 9, Bread Alone Bakery, The Golden Notebook, and Tinker Toys. There are also stores like Not Fade Away, where you can buy tie-dye shirts and incense. For nature, there’s Thorn Preserve, The Comeau Property, and Overlook Mountain Wild Forest is nearby.

Daniel Romero, a broker at Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North, says that Woodstock has always been a desirable place for buyers from the city, but it has seen an increase in activity during Covid. “The increase in activity is really across all counties in upstate New York,” he says.

Prices have also increased in Woodstock since the beginning of the pandemic. “Inventory is still low while demand is as high as ever and pricing is reflecting that. And, with closings from summer listings just starting to make their way into public record, comps are higher as well,” Romero says.

New Yorkers moving here earlier in the year may have been testing the waters with rentals or were purchasing vacation houses. Now buyers are looking for primary residences, especially for those who are working for home for the foreseeable future. “I have seen several [buyers] who moved upstate during the pandemic find that the quality of life, especially being immersed in nature, is something they are not willing to give up and have made employment changes to lock in their full-time status upstate,” Romero says.
