This three-bedroom, three-bath property is about a three-minute drive from Paradox Bay.

To me, "Lake Placid" will forever refer to the 1999 Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda horror/comedy film. But of course the resort town in the Adirondacks has a much bigger claim to fame and much more to recommend it. It's a two-time Winter Olympic site—in fact, Lake Placid was the site of North America's first Winter Olympics in 1932, and it hosted again in 1980. You can find a wealth of outdoor activities in all seasons, like hiking, camping, road-biking, and boating on Mirror Lake, and snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice-hiking and downhill skiing at nearby Whiteface Mountain.

For folks who prefer non-outdoorsy stuff, there's the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. There are also a number of family-friendly eateries, like Downtown Diner, in addition to popular pubs like Lisa G's. Best of all, Lake Placid's got some good deals when it comes to real estate, offering up a number of relatively upscale, modern cabins that make for excellent year-round vacation houses.

Consider, for instance, this three-bedroom, three-bath cabin at 5 Iroquois Ln., now on the market for $615,000. The house was built in 2017 using certified green materials, and features a slew of modern amenities and touches, like this funky staircase and living room wall paneling that repurposes boards from a 100-year-old barn.

Other highlights include washer and dryer units, an attached garage, and mountain views. The house is about a five-hour drive from the city. You can also take Amtrak's Adirondack line from Penn Station to Westport, NY, then take a shuttle to Lake Placid.
