If you’re looking to buy a New York City apartment that’s not a white box and has some character, you’re likely going to focus your search on prewar co-ops, which also tend to have more living space—and are cheaper than condos—bonus!

That’s because prewar co-ops have classic features that give your apartment more personality, like arched doorways, high ceilings, and sunken living rooms, details which also help make them seem bigger. Many of these apartments also feature separate dining spaces, dressing rooms, multiple closets, and built-in shelves for all of your stuff. And there are the characteristics that just give your place more charm like original moldings and fireplaces.

Most new developments lack many of these features, especially if they have a modern, open floor plan, but if you’re looking for a place that has newer finishes, there are renovated co-ops on the market that still preserve the apartment’s originality.
