If you’re looking for a rental that allows pets, it probably seems like you have more options now. Some buildings relaxed their pet policies during the pandemic to encourage renters to sign leases when the market was slow.

But be aware: Just because a building says it is pet friendly, doesn’t always mean it is—so do your homework before signing a lease. Some so-called pet friendly buildings will allow cats and not dogs. Some buildings that permit dogs will have restrictions on sizes and breeds. And even if they permit your pooch, you might be stuck using a service entrance instead of the main lobby. You also can’t assume your pet is allowed in an outdoor amenity space like a courtyard. Keep in mind these restrictions don’t apply to service animals.

The easiest way to find out if your specific dog, or any pet, is allowed is to ask the landlord or building management directly. Your application may also spell out restrictions on breed, age, and size.

To help with your pet-friendly apartment search, check out these five for rent in Prospect Park South, Mott Haven, Bushwick, Astoria, and Hell’s Kitchen.
