New Yorkers who use the Airbnb platform to rent out their places suffered a double whammy when the company changed its policy to allow guests who booked before March 14 to cancel without penalty because of the coronavirus. Short-term rental companies are also reeling from losses as tourism and business travel has ground to halt in the city, where all non-essential businesses are closed.

On Sunday, StreetEasy said it was joining The Real Estate Board of New York and stopping the days on market counter. Last Thursday, REBNY directed its RLS network, which include realtor.com and renthop, to halt the clock in response to a request from the New York Residential Agent Continuum.

It’s a very privileged group who can ride out the pandemic out East, now that schools and non-essential businesses have closed, and New Yorkers are being told to hunker down and maintain a distance of six feet from each other. But it’s not like the houses were ready and waiting for New Yorkers to drive (or fly) out—owners were not expecting renters until May and are scrambling to prep large houses to receive tenants.
