If you’re considering a move to Westchester County and are finding yourself priced out of most areas, check out Peekskill, New York, a small city on the Hudson River just 50 miles from New York City.

That’s because it’s more affordable to buy a house here compared to other areas in the county. The median sales price here is $390,000, according to Redfin. (For comparison, the median for the county is $595,100 and in nearby Tarrytown it’s $783,000.) Right now there are about 50 listings in the area including condos and single-family houses. You won’t find any multi-million dollar spreads but there are renovated Colonials and Victorians within walking distance of the downtown area.

Downtown Peekskill is lined with local stores and restaurants like Birdsall House, Gleason’s, and Peekskill Coffee. You also have access to Blue Mountain Park, Hudson Valley MOCA, and Paramount Hudson Valley Theater. FDR State Park, Bear Mountain State Park, and Manitoga are also nearby. And MetroNorth gets you to Grand Central in just over an hour.
