After a recent apple picking trip, my friends and I went out for dinner in Beacon, New York. It’s one of my favorite places in the Hudson Valley because of its artsy small-town vibe, good restaurants, and scenic location.

I’m hardly the only one who thinks this place is worth going out of your way to visit: It was named the coolest small town in the U.S. according to Hudson Valley Post.

It makes sense, considering its quick commute to New York City via car or Metro-North and the many things you can do there. It’s home to Dia Beacon, a popular modern and contemporary art museum; Hudson Beach Glass, an award-winning glass studio; and Fridman Gallery. You’ll also find locally-owned boutiques and restaurants on Main Street. Some of my favorite spots are Alps Sweet Shop, Homespun Food for a casual bite, The Roundhouse (it's got nice views of a creek and waterfall), Max’s On Main for a drink and bar food, and Reserva (a wine bar with great charcuterie).

When it comes to buying a house here, the current median sales price is $490,000, according to Realtor.com. Right now there are 36 houses for sale including places within walking distance to Main Street and some farther out. There’s also one condo for sale if you prefer apartment-style living.
