New Yorkers have long been lured to Los Angeles for its laid-back lifestyle, warmer weather, cheaper cost of living, and career opportunities in the entertainment industry. The question of which city is better may be a perennial debate but the answer might come down to where rents are lower.

In addition, many New Yorkers move to Los Angeles because you can also give up crowded public transportation for your own car, trade an apartment for a house, and enjoy easy access to the outdoors thanks to nearby canyons and beaches. And because LA is far more spread out than NYC (another reason why having a car is a good idea), you won’t feel like you’re living on top of your neighbors.

When you’re thinking about a move here, your neighborhood is even more important than it is here in NYC. Public transportation isn’t as widespread as it is in NYC, so you’ll need to be close to your job if you don’t want to spend lots of time in traffic. Neighborhoods like Venice and Echo Park are good picks if you want to be near beaches and parks while areas like Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles are better for big-city living.

Another perk: You can rent a house with a yard, parking, and in-unit laundry for less than an apartment in NYC. The average rent in Los Angeles is currently $2,450 according to Zumper. That's somewhat of a steal, considering the average rent for a Manhattan apartment hit $5,246 in August, according to the Elliman Report. Right now there are 740 houses for rent in LA for less than $5,000, and many apartments too.
