If you’re in the market for a beach house in a place with a laid-back vibe, consider Hatteras Island, North Carolina, a barrier island at the tip of the Outer Banks.

It’s where my family has vacationed for years (I was just there last week) and we like the fact that beaches here are far less crowded than other popular destinations. Plus the end of summer is a great time to hunt for a place: The weather is still warm and the tourists have largely left.

Hatteras Island is made up a several villages across the Cape Hatteras National Seashore including Buxton, where you can grab breakfast at Orange Blossom Bakery (one of my favorite spots) or head to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (I climbed to the top as a kid); Hatteras at far end of the island; Avon, an area where you’ll find more shopping and dining options; and Rodanthe, where you’ll find Rodanthe Pier (you can fish from the pier without a fishing license).

Another perk: You can buy a house here for less than other parts of the Outer Banks (and far less than the Hamptons and Jersey Shore). The median sales price is currently $585,500 and there are about 100 houses on the market. Buying a house here is also a good investment; you can get rental income during summer and even from September to November, when there are popular fishing tournaments.
