Edison, New Jersey, a suburb in Middlesex County, is a good option if you and your family are looking for a place with a quick commute to Manhattan. It has well-rated public schools—and it’s just over an hour away from Manhattan via New Jersey Transit or car.

The township is also very diverse with a large Asian community, The New York Times reports. There’s Oak Tree Road, known as Little India for its concentration of Indian restaurants and stores. There’s also lots of greenspace, thanks to Stephen J. Capestro Park and Roosevelt Park (it’s 217 acres), and country clubs like Plainfield Country Club.

Metuchen, a separate borough in the middle of Edison, has a popular walkable downtown area that was a semifinalist for this year’s Great American Main Street award. Here you’ll find eateries like Cafe Paris, Brewed Awakening, and Pink Lotus plus stores like Cachet Boutique, O P Metuchen Books, and Papillon & Company.

When it comes to buying a house in Edison, the median sales price is $465,000, according to Realtor.com. And unlike many other suburban areas, you’ll have lots of listings to choose from: There are 120 houses on the market right now. There are also plenty of houses for rent if you want to test out suburban life before making a bigger financial commitment.
