Ridgewood, New Jersey, a village in Bergen County, is a popular suburb for families to move to because of its proximity to New York City, highly-rated public schools, and walkable downtown.

It appeals to New Yorkers who don't always want to rely on a car to get around, says Megan Fox, a broker at Compass in Bergen County. Downtown you can find popular boutiques like Gardiner & Co., Town & Country Apothecary plus restaurants like The Daily Treat and Steel Wheel Tavern. You’ll also find Veterans Park, Van Neste Memorial Square, and the Ridgewood NJ Transit stop here.

The town is made up of several neighborhoods where you with a variety architecture styles like Tudors, Colonials, and split levels, Fox says. Most of the houses here are older, renovated properties and there aren’t a lot of new developments, she says. There are also several apartment complexes downtown.

When it comes to buying a house here now, the median sales price is $875,000, a slight decrease over last year, according to Redfin. The sales market is slowing down a bit with the higher cost of borrowing and listings are spending more days on the market, so you'll face less competition.
