Q & A Realty/Zillow

The town of Woodstock, New York, has a pretty recognizable name, but it wasn't the site of the famous 1969 concert. That was held at Bethel Woods, about an hour-and-a-half's drive away. Festival producer Michael Lang wanted to hold it at Woodstock, the town turned down his permit application. Still, Woodstock's got plenty of music-related pride, and you can expect a whole host of celebratory concerts and events around the anniversary of the festival each summer.

Woodstock is in the Catskill Mountains, and offers tons of outdoorsy activities. Overlook Mountain has a popular 4.6 mile hiking trail. There's a 2.7-mile loop around Ashokan Reservoir. If you want an even more intense mountain experience, the 11,500-acre Indian Head Wilderness is just a few miles from Woodstock, with five Catskill mountain peaks.

Woodstock also has a number of popular art galleries and funky local shops, a smattering of which you can find on Tinker Street, the town's main drag. There are some cute "head shops" and boutiques hocking hippie-themed trinkets, and you can pick up baked goods at Peace, Love, & Cupcakes, a Food Network-award winning cupcake shop.

There's some good farm-to-table food here, as well. Italian eatery Cucina uses locally-sourced ingredients to prepare their fresh-tasting dishes, which they serve up in a restored farmhouse. There's Silvia, a slightly upscale spot that also serves farm-to-table dishes, and Tinker Taco Lab, a low-key eatery offering up tacos and margaritas.

Then, of course, there's the real estate, some of which is quite breathtaking. Take, for instance, the three-bedroom, three-bath house with a stone tower at 85 Upper West Ohayo Rd., now on the market for $1,050,000. Built by a master stone mason in 1984, the house is known locally as Volovski's Stone Tower House; it sits on three acres, and offers up 180-degree panoramic mountain views. The house opens with an open-concept living area, with wood-block flooring and a large granite fireplace.
