If you’re searching for a pet-friendly rental apartment in New York City, you can expect to pay more. That’s because buildings that allow pets also tend to have other amenities and are in desirable neighborhoods—and that makes them pricier than bare-bones buildings without pet perks.

More buildings went pet friendly during the height of the pandemic (or relaxed their pet policies) when there were lots of vacant apartments—and those rules appear to be staying put. Right now there are 2,287 pet-friendly rentals across the city below $3,000 on StreetEasy. And if you have a larger dog, or a certain breed, you may have an easier time finding an apartment these days.

Just do your research and make sure your building is really pet friendly. Some listings might be tagged as pet friendly, but they only allow cats. Other buildings might have restrictions on how many pets live in the apartment or limitations on sizes and breeds. Also make sure your four-legged family members are allowed in amenity spaces—and even the elevator.

To help with your apartment search, here are five pet-friendly rentals in Washington Heights, Flatbush, Ridgewood, East Harlem, and Lincoln Square for less than $3,000 a month.
