High housing costs in New York City are nothing new—our hometown is consistently ranked among the world's priciest places to live, and its status as a capital of finance, media and the arts means that's unlikely to change anytime soon. But for every Russian oligarch parking tens of millions of dollars in a condo overlooking Central Park, there are hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers just scraping by. It's in this starkly stratified landscape that the average person makes $33,000 per year—and there are apartments on the market that cost more than that each month in rent.

UPPER EAST SIDE: A 6,500-square-foot five-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath duplex with an open layout at 515 Park Ave., between East 59th and East 60th streets.
