MIDTOWN: An 8,000-square-foot six-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bath full-floor unit at at 230 West 56th St., between Broadway and Eighth Avenue, with plank floors, bespoke cabinetry and hardware, two Sub-Zero refrigerators and a La Cornue range in the kitchen, central controls for lighting, shades, audio and TV. High housing costs in New York City are nothing new—our hometown is consistently ranked among the world's priciest places to live, and its status as a capital of finance, media and the arts means that's unlikely to change anytime soon. But for every Russian oligarch parking tens of millions of dollars in a condo overlooking Central Park, there are hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers just scraping by. It's in this starkly stratified landscape that the average person makes $33,000 per year—and there are apartments on the market that cost more than that each month in rent.

Here are 10 such listings, all in Manhattan. If on the off chance you're reading this and end up renting one, we'll happily accept a finder's fee.

UPPER EAST SIDE: A 6,500-square-foot five-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath duplex with an open layout at 515 Park Ave., between East 59th and East 60th streets. The place comes with oak floors, English oak paneling, custom millwork, oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, oversized windows and a private elevator landing.
