Bye bye Hell's Kitchen; It's back East I go

It seems like just yesterday I was searching for a new apartment, but actually it was February 2012 when I was eager to move from the Upper East Side to Hell’s Kitchen, mostly prompted by having a Peeping Tom across the avenue from me. I wrote back then of my trials and tribulations of finding a suitable place. I wish I could say a lot has changed since then and that apartment hunting is far more fun.

Hell's Bitchen: R.I.P., super Bobby

If you have been reading my column for the last year and a half, you have read about my super. Over the course of my residency here I have (silently) battled with him for propping open our building’s doors with rocks so any neighborhood miscreant could, and did, enter the building unannounced, and for being the cause of my building being the only one I’ve come across in NYC that does not recycle. About 10 days ago on the day I was in an uproar over finding out that an upper floor in my building had bed bugs (!) and subsequently hatching my plan of escape, my super had a heart attack. I saw an ambulance, police car and neighborhoodies milling about. When I spoke to the landlord she mentioned the super was in the hospital.

Attack of the tourists: Tenth Avenue is no longer for natives only

I keep hearing about the emergence of millions of cicadas on the East Coast this summer after their 17 years underground. And while summer in NYC has always been prime time for tourists to descend on us in droves, I feel like this summer they are rivaling the anticipated cicadas in number.

I’m not sure which I fear more.

It is great to live in Midtown because I seem to always be equidistant from anywhere I may have to go, things tend to be well-lit and open all night and there are tons of transportation options.

I firmly believe that there needs to be a category in the DSM-5 (fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders that launches this week) devoted specifically to disorders caused by NYC real estate.

Believe it or not, the sight of a CVS is welcomed in Hell's Kitchen

While walking along Tenth Avenue near West 53rd Street the other day I spotted a sign that said, “CVS/pharmacy: Coming Soon.”

Now, in a city peppered with Duane Reades and other assorted pharmacies one would not think this is noteworthy news. However, the nearest Duane Reade on Tenth Avenue is many blocks away on West 37th and the nearest CVS is on West 42nd Street.  There are many on Ninth Avenue, but in NYC an avenue is actually a world away.

So this new CVS is a real game changer. Welcome to the dance floor, CVS.
