If you want to vacation this summer in the mountains and enjoy the outdoors, the Berkshires in Massachusetts is a good place to go. It’s less than three hours from New York City and offers lots to do for both outdoorsy and artsy types.

The region stretches across more than 30 towns and villages including popular towns like Great Barrington, where you can hike at Monument Mountain or swim at Lake Mansfield; Stockbridge, home to Norman Rockwell Museum; and Lenox, where you’ll find Miraval Resort & Spa and for live theater there’s Shakespeare & Company.

The Berkshires are also known for cultural destinations like Tanglewood, an outdoor music venue that’s the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, which hosts in-person and virtual screenings and events; and art museums like MASS MoCA and Berkshire Art Museum. And, of course, there’s plenty of things to do outdoors at places like Lenox Town Beach, Jiminy Peak Mountain Adventure Park, and the region’s many waterfalls, lakes, and mountains.
