Montclair, New Jersey, is a great spot for New Yorkers in search of suburban digs, thanks in part to its four thriving areas (Montclair Center, Walnut, Watchung, and Upper Montclair), which are full of restaurants, farmers markets, boutiques. This transplant writes in the New York Times that Montclair is a "city person’s suburb." She points out that it has some 85 restaurants and no fast-food chains. It's also (naturally) filled with fellow ex-NYers. If you're making the move from Brooklyn, you're even more likely to meet people from your former neighborhood there.

The town also has large, gorgeous houses. Average prices in Montclair are around $750,000-$800,000—and you usually get four bedrooms and a large yard for that figure, which is about the average asking price for a NYC one bedroom.
