This Gramercy studio has been renovated but the kitchen and bath are a bit extra
With a price of $615,000, this Gramercy studio, #1D, at 201 East 21st St., is a bargain for the neighborhood, where the median price for a studio is currently $650,000.
The 590-square-foot co-op has lots of storage, thanks to three closets plus built-ins. It was also recently renovated with a big dose of stainless steel and frosted glass in the kitchen and a plenty of glass and marble in the bath, which may not appeal to everyone. Still, it is move-in ready.
At roughly 20-by-19 feet, the living area is pretty big and has room for a TV area with a couch, a large dresser, a dining table, another couch closer to the kitchen, and a bed in the corner, where it isn’t quite separate from the living space, but is at least in its own corner. A wall of windows and light wood floors make the room feel brighter, as do recessed lights around the perimeter of the room. Fine-looking built-ins and a decorative fireplace offer several places to display books and framed photos.
There’s a closet in the corner by the window, and two more closets plus some built-in cabinets in the foyer, meaning there’s more storage space in here than the average studio.
The modern kitchen isn’t huge, but it manages to fit in lots of frosted glass cabinets to store pots, pans, and plus a small deli's worth of pantry items. The cabinets are rimmed with stainless steel, which is a rather unusual decorative choice in a kitchen, but they do match the stainless steel appliances (including a dishwasher) perfectly. Another curious choice? Wood ceilings. But they add an unexpected warmth to a space that might otherwise look somewhat cold. There are also white marble countertops with gray veining that offer a surprisingly decent amount of prep space in such a compact room.
The bathroom is very modern, with white-and-gray marble on the walls and by the tub, glass doors on the shower, and a vanity big enough to hold ample toiletries.
The studio is in Quaker Ridge, a 19-story post-war co-op building that has a full-time doorman and porter, a live-in super, a laundry room, and direct access to a parking garage. The pet-friendly building allows for a maximum of 75 percent financing. Maintenance is $737 a month.
Three new buildings with 109 apartments are planned or currently under construction within half a block of Quaker Ridge—including Gramercy Park Condos at 200 East 21st St., a 20-story, 65-apartment building; Gramercy Square Condominium at 228 East 20th St., a seven-story, 37-apartment building; and 266 Third Ave., a four-story, seven-apartment residential building. All are scheduled to be completed in 2021. Expect construction-related nuisances in the neighborhood until then.
