Median prices are a very good way of gauging the cost of a neighborhood. Unlike averages, which can be swayed both by super-expensive or super-cheap properties, medians give a realistic sense of prices. That's why, for this edition of Price Check, we've decided to show you what you can expect for (or around) the median price in all five boroughs.

First, the numbers: The median in Manhattan is $1.074 million (according to Douglas Elliman), in Brooklyn it's $735,000 (also per Douglas Elliman), and in Queens, $499,000 (Douglas Elliman). In the Bronx, the median is $382,950 (according to Trulia) and in Staten Island $474,900 (from the Staten Island Board of Realtors).
