Rewind a few months and remember how envious you were of those lucky enough to have a vacation house to escape the heat of the city? One Brick contributor seriously courted the idea of buying a place in the North Fork; another spent months last year checking out places in the Catskills. But the competition was stiff, the sellers not budging with their askings. When you're aiming to buy a getaway during prime vacation season, you're bound to hit roadblocks.
There's no arguing it: Summer is over. But not for the new owner of Connecticut's 127-year-old Saybrook Breakwater Light, who won the structure—a fine example of the quintessential beachside icon—in an auction for $290,000, per the Hartford Courant.
Admittedly, we sometimes underestimate Staten Island. But charms it has a-plenty, especially as a change of scenery from the rest of the city. Take its ponds, which dot the borough and make the island so much greener and more of a respite than so many other spots in NYC. The NYC market's been notorious lately for having low inventory, so much so that buyers are often prepped for bidding wars. But at the Carnegie House, there were, at last count by Bloomberg, 49 apartments on the market out of 324 total—a little over a sixth.
