Hawaii Life

There are a lot of great beach towns within driving distance of New York City, but even the loveliest spot along the Jersey Shore can't hold a candle to the Hawaiian Islands. And though Hawaii conjures up images of pricey luxury resorts, the Aloha State's got some more reasonably priced areas for vacationers or folks looking for a part-time residence. Take, for instance, Lahaina, a town in West Maui. Wallethub recently ranked Lahaina the second-best beach town in the country, thanks in part to its gorgeous weather, low crime, thriving economy, and all-around high quality of life.

The best thing to do in Lahaina, of course, is to find a beach and sit on it. Ka'anapali Beach is considered one of the best beaches in Maui, though there are a number of other spots in or near Lahaina you can frequent, too. The town is also rife with sailing and boat tours, sunset dinner cruises, and surf schools. If you're into adventuring, the Kapalua Coastal Trail is a great easy hike with coastline views, or you can chill out in Banyan Tree Park, home to Lahaina's famous, massive, century-plus-old banyan tree.

The town proper is a little touristy, but Lahaina Front Street's got some cute shops and eateries, and the town's has fancy seafood spots like Lahaina Grill and low-key spots like Asian noodle shop Star Noodle. And for folks looking for real estate, there are a number of condo villages in Lahaina, where you can purchase a vacation home, use it as you please, and rent it out the rest of the year. Take, for instance, the two-bedroom, two-bath condo at 4531 Lower Honoapiilani Rd. #2, now on the market for $895,000. The condo, with an interior that was recently remodeled, is part of Lahaina's Kahana Village, a three-acre complex that sits right on the beach.

The unit's open floor plan has an airy living room with vaulted ceilings, lots of light, and an outdoor terrace with west-facing ocean views. There's also tiled flooring, to keep things cool.

According to Kahana Village's website, rentals come with four Tommy Bahama chairs; it's unclear if that deal includes condos for sale, but these are what they look like:

There's also a washer/dryer in the unit.

To get to Lahaina, you'll have to fly of course. It's about a 40-minute drive to Lahaina from Kahului Airport, Maui's main airport.
