New York is in the midst of cold spell upon cold spell, a wintry nightmare made no more bearable by the much-hyped "bomb cyclone" blanketing the East Coast in snow and ice today. Rather than spend your waking hours hugging your radiator and praying for spring, consider fleeing this frigid Hoth clone for balmy Key West, where average winter temperatures hover around the mid-70s (the high today is a relatively frigid 62) and six-toed cats roam free.

Owning property in Key West does come with a hurricane risk, but last summer's Hurricane Irma was the first major storm to hit the island in over half a century, and even that powerful hurricane didn't do much lasting damage, as most businesses bounced back in just a few weeks.

We're not the only ones who think Key West is still a desirable place for a second, or even a first home. For evidence, look no further than the median home sale price of $549,700, which is higher than much of the country, though not quite at Manhattan levels.

And what you get here is well worth the money. The Keys' main metropolis has killer nightlife along Duval Street, access to the Florida Keys Reef and the Gulf of Mexico, the titular desserts served up at the Key West Key Lime Pie Company, and the aforementioned polydactyl cats who reside at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. Key West is also home to Robert, the world's most haunted murderous doll.
