Margaretville, New York, a small town nestled in the Catskills, is ideal if you’re ready for a laid-back upstate lifestyle with lots to do outdoors all year round.

It’s surrounded by many parks and hiking trails like Dry Brook Ridge, Kelly Hollow Trail, and HuckleBerry Brook Trail. In the winter, you can head to Belleayre Mountain, a popular skiing destination where I skied for the first—and last—time. For fun in the summer, there’s Belleayre Beach, where you can swim, sunbathe and rent paddle boats. Hanah Mountain Resort & Country Club is also nearby.

The town itself is a bit sleepy with a quaint walkable area around Main Street, where you’ll find a few local eateries and stores like Picnic (great for a quick sandwich), Binnekill Tavern, Longyear Gallery, and Cafe Marguerite. And it’s not too far from more popular destinations like Phoenicia, Woodstock, and Bear Spring Mountain.

Another perk: When it comes to buying a house here, it’s more affordable than some other popular towns in the Catskills. The median listing price is $385,000, according to Realtor.com. There are currently about 17 houses on the market, many of which are located on several acres of land.
