This renovated Park Slope townhouse has a climbing wall and a huge garden

This light-filled townhouse at 171 Garfield Pl. in Park Slope has amenities to please children—and the child within. The finished basement has a climbing wall, plus there’s a swing and a playhouse in the 79-foot landscaped garden. The house is listed for $3.9 million

Adults will appreciate that the building’s renovation preserved many of the original details of the 1901 house, including turned balusters, newel posts at the stairs, pine floors in the bedrooms, and a hand-carved knotty pine mantle over the fireplace in the living room.

In addition to the epic climbing wall, the basement is outfitted with surround sound.

The renovation opened up the rear-facing walls with floor-to-ceiling glass doors for easy access to the garden on the ground floor and a terrace on the parlor floor. Tina Manis, who studied with renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, did the design.

The garden floor has a bedroom with full bath, and a wet bar near the doors to a living room, which opens onto the garden.

The chef’s kitchen, located on the parlor floor, includes a Wolf range, a Sub-Zero fridge, a Miele dishwasher, a large center island, and custom cabinetry. The dining room faces the front. The living room faces a terrace.

The third floor has two bedrooms, connected by a wall of custom closets, a full bath with a claw-foot tub, and a full-size washer and dryer. The master bedroom and bath, on the fourth floor, also features a sitting room as well as a laundry chute.

The house also has a new roof, boiler, hot water heater, plumbing, and electric, a Tensui water filtration system, and an irrigation system.

According to the owner, in the 1970s the families on the block agreed to keep their fences low and added gates so their children could move freely between the yards. The kids living there today still continue this tradition.

The townhouse is two-and-a-half blocks from Prospect Park, where there’s a farmers market on Saturdays. The nearest subway stops are the 2 and 3 at Grand Army Plaza and the B and Q at Seventh Avenue.
