Many restaurants and cafes remain shut down in New York City, and the return of indoor dining remains some way off into the future. The reality is that much of the city's famed food scene is on pause.

That's why many people have taken up cooking at home, from baking bread to experimenting with complex recipes. The thrill of home cooking is a joy best experienced in a nice kitchen, of course—which makes right now a great time to search for rental apartments with gourmet kitchens.

Here are five apartments around the city with beautiful, spacious kitchens, available right now.

737 Park Ave., #3E, Upper East Side

Perfect for entertaining and relaxation alike, this three-bedroom, five-bath corner apartment is 3,100 square feet of tasteful Upper East Side prestige. The hearth of the home is the windowed eat-in kitchen, which has marble floors and countertops, custom Varenna cabinetry, Miele appliances, Franke sinks, and a separate adjoining pantry area. Behind the kitchen, a private staff quarters/office can be accessed by its own service entrance, discreetly closed off with its own en-suite bath and laundry area.

Elsewhere, the corner master suite has two spacious walk-in closets and two windowed bathrooms with custom vanities, Dornbracht fixtures, soaking tub, glass-enclosed showers, heated floors, and steam room. The flooring is rift and quartered solid oak throughout. Two additional bedrooms in a separate wing of the apartment have their own bathrooms. One of the bedrooms has been remade into a home theater/bar and lounge area. The rooms are accessed through a study/library that can be closed off for privacy, perfect for pleasure reading, work, or a board game.

The apartment was designed by top AD100 designer Mark Cunningham to maximize its corner location. Natural light streams in, and south-facing windows offer great tree-line views of the august Upper East Side. The building is located just two blocks from the 72nd Street Central Park entrance, and has all the amenities you'd expect of a top-notch Park Avenue building: a 24-hour doormen, porters and elevator attendants, and amenities like a fitness center, playroom, garden room with catering kitchen and adjoining courtyard, and bicycle/stroller storage. The entire home is equipped with a state-of-the-art home automation system designed and implemented by Kraus Hi-Tech, including sound, lighting, security, high-speed internet (with multiple routers), a full-tech stack closet, and electronic shades in every room. It is asking $39,950 a month, and is available turnkey and fully furnished through Labor Day 2021.

Sleek and stylish, this two-bedroom, two-bath apartment at the heart of fashionable Tribeca has an architect-designed open kitchen, with a large granite island, that flows into a spacious and inviting living area, making it perfect for hosting safe dinner parties. Other features of this 1,654-square-foot loft include soaring 10-and-a-half-foot ceilings, new hardwood flooring, an en suite primary bedroom, a bathroom with a double sink and marble floors, a washer/dryer, stainless steel appliances and a dishwasher in the kitchen, a video security system, and a keyless entry system. It's centrally located between east and west side transportation, within two blocks of Whole Foods, Washington Market, City Hall Parks, and much more. It is listed for $9,000 a month, with no fee.

113 East 35th St., Murray Hill

This townhouse—formerly the home of the actor couple Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn—is a historic charmer that has been spruced up for modern living. A meticulous restoration has brought back the original mahogany banisters, shutters on all the windows, moldings, and beautiful hardwood floors. The deluxe open kitchen has Carrera marble countertops, cherry cabinets, a Viking oven, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a Bosch dishwasher, and a Sub-Zero wine refrigerator that holds up to 130 bottles. Just off the kitchen is a spacious dining room with a Venetian glass chandelier. The dining area opens onto a terrace that overlooks a private courtyard, ideal for outdoor dining and entertaining. A powder room and a living room with extra-large windows and a decorative fireplace complete the parlor level.

One floor up is the primary bedroom, complete with en-suite bathroom, two closets, and another decorative fireplace. There's an additional full bath and a second bedroom currently being used as a den on this level.

The third level has two more large bedrooms—making four total—and a third full bathroom. The laundry area is on this floor and has a full-size washer and vented dryer. From this floor, you have access to a private roof deck with stunning views of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, and prime Murray Hill with its wonderful array of shops and services, including Trader Joe's, Fairway, and many restaurants. This townhome is listed at $14,500 a month.

6 Verandah Place

6 Verandah Pl., Cobble Hill

A hidden gem in the heart of Cobble Hill, this five-bedroom, three-bathroom house is a rare and special sanctuary. It has a great location—across the street from Cobble Hill Park, on a quiet historical block—and 2,800 square feet spread across four floors.

Enter through the bright and charming foyer on the ground level, where you'll find a library/bedroom with built-in cabinets and a living room with a door leading out into your own secret garden. One flight up is the open kitchen, the hearth of this home. It boasts custom maple cabinets, granite counters, a Sub-Zero fridge, Viking stove with vented hood, Bosch dishwasher, and is adjacent to a large, open, airy dining room with a wood-burning fireplace. A small bedroom and full bath round out this floor.

The top floor is where you'll find the primary bedroom and bathroom, which has a soaking tub with mosaic tile. Two more bedrooms are also on this floor. The garden level can be a live/work studio, media, or play space, guest room, or in-law suite, with a full bath and basement access.

This rental includes a full-size vented washer/dryer, and pets upon approval. It is asking $11,500 a month, with the month of August free.

220 Central Park South, #31A, Central Park South

This four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath apartment, with unobstructed views of Central Park and magnificent light with northern, western, and southern exposures. The kitchen is highlighted by a large white marble center-island and countertops, accented with glass and chrome cabinetry. It has Miele and Sub-Zero appliances.

The primary bedroom also offers city and park views, with a gorgeous en suite bath clad in marble, Lefroy Brooks fixtures, an oversized soaking tub, heated floors, steam shower, and water closet. The three additional bedrooms all feature en-suite baths as well. Additional residence features include wide plank American White Oak herringbone flooring, recessed lighting, laundry room, powder room, and generous storage. The building, which was designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, has amenities curated for the most discerning tastes, including but not limited to: a state-of-the-art fitness center, squash court, pool, spa, movie theater, game room, playroom, white-glove staff service, and an in-house restaurant operated by Jean-Georges (not that you'll ever get tired of that kitchen). This apartment is listed for $70,000 a month.
