As New York housing costs continue their inexorable rise, New Yorkers are fleeing for more affordable cities, where it's possible to own a house without running a bank. The state lost nearly 200,000 residents from 2015 to 2016, including nearly 45,000 who bailed on Brooklyn, making New York the biggest net people loser of any state (new immigrants and births more than made up the difference). In Atlanta, Georgia, house prices are steadily rising, and inventory is decreasing, but the median sales price is still just $239,000. And in suburban Clayton County, just south of the city, the average wage earner spends just 12 percent of her income on housing, making it the fourth most affordable county in the country by that measure.
In addition to affordable real estate, Atlanta has a vibrant food scene, a music and entertainment industry with a global reach, storied arts and civil rights institutions, and 3,000 acres of parkland.
