deck envy (dek en vee) - n.  Obsessive longing among apartment dwellers for a roof deck or terrace, often triggered by barbecue smells, a view onto someone else's outdoor space, or sounds of an al fresco gathering to which one is not invited.

After a long, dark winter, Patricia came down with a case of deck envy so debilitating that she kept her blinds permanently drawn so as not to accidentally gaze at the lushly landscaped south-facing roofdeck across the street.
