The DHP Andora sofa is one of the most popular on Houzz.

In most New York City apartments, space comes at a premium. Many apartment dwellers live in one bedrooms and even more live in studios. In both instances, a sleeper sofa may come in handy, either as a bed that turns into a couch when nighttime is over, or a spare sleeping spot for guests (or roommates).

But how to pick the best sleeper (sleeper sofa and sofa bed are different names for the same thing, FYI) for your apartment can be challenging, because there is much to consider, from cost to size to comfort.

Home design site Houzz analyzed sleeper sofa and sofa bed ordering trends in New York City over the past year and shared their results with us. Here are the most popular sleepers:

1. Modern Tufted Linen Splitback Recliner, $170

This sleek sleeper sofa features simple, mid-century design and natural wooden legs. It's also a versatile piece. The back can be folded down on one or both sides. Available in multiple colors including light gray, pictured.

2. Frankfort Convertible Sectional Sofa Bed, $839

Featuring both a sofa and a chaise lounge, this piece is great for apartments with a bit more space. There's more than enough seating for guests, and when used as a sleeper there are a couple of different bed options. Available in multiple colors including ash, pictured.

3. Fannie Sofa Bed with Slip Back, $789

The cylindrical pillows and minimal design of this sleeper—check out the sophisticated stainless steel legs—sold us. The seat back has two positions, too. Put each panel halfway back for lounging and all the way down for sleeping. Available in multiple colors as well as gray, pictured.

4. Sunset Trading Horizon Slipcovered Sleeper Sofa and Chaise, $2,193

The classic design of this slipcovered couch, complete with skirt, will appeal to those seeking a more traditional look for their apartment. The appeal here is obvious: looking at this piece it's not immediately apparent that there's a bed inside. The cushions are also filled with feather down. Available in multiple colors including linen, pictured.

5. Maestro Modern Sofa Bed, $3,123

This sofa bed is for the very design-forward apartment dweller. Featuring a solid wood frame, this piece goes from couch to sofa bed with one simple movement: just pull the back of the couch. The queen size mattress in ocean blue is the most popular on Houzz

6. Jill Sofa Bed and End Table, $1,819

Talk about versatility! This piece has two parts for sitting and sleeping, in addition to tabletop elements. The double seat folds down into a bed and the single chair slides left to meet it, creating more surface area. This is a fun sleeper and we're not surprised it's popular.

7. Linen-Like Fabric Upholstered Sectional Sofa Bed with Reversible Storage Chaise, $710

This sectional pulls out into a bed but the real magic in this sleeper sofa is the chaise element, which can either be on the right or left side of the sofa and comes with storage. Obviously, this is a great piece for a small apartment.

8. Bonded Leather Living Room Sleeper, $550

Petite in size, this loveseat folds out into a bed and will appeal to many a New Yorker in a small space. Available in both gray (pictured) and black, the leather gives this piece an extra bit of class.

9. DHP Andora Coil Linen Convertible Sleeper Sofa, $280

This modern yet understated sleeper features tufted upholstery that gives it a clean look that will blend well in most apartments. Available in gray, white and navy blue, pictured.

10. Corona Convertible Loveseat Sleeper, $356

We love the modest profile of this loveseat—and how easy it is to convert it into a double/full bed. The gray color, pictured, is handsome and understated.

11. Pembroke Sleeper Sofa, $227

This convertible couch features upholstered armrests and a modern look thanks to the metal legs and a muted design. The best part about this piece is how the back converts: it can be folded partially down to a lounging position or fully flat for sleeping.

12. Movie Sleeper Sofa, $1,763

This sleeper sofa converts into a bed and comes in 30 different colors, with the most popular being the clean and uniformly easy-to-blend black. It features wooden legs and a versatile design.

13. Zipline Convertible Sofa Bed and Ottomans, $675

This fun sofa offers a lot of flexibility and comes in a variety of colors, including java (pictured). The ottomans can be stacked into the sofa or the whole thing can be folded out with the ottomans in the middle, creating a California king-size bed. The cover is machine washable.

14. Vitalia Orange Sofa Sleeper, $564

This adorable and well-designed couch converts easily into a flat surface for sleeping. This is perfect for occasional guests.

15. DHP Pin Velvet Convertible Sleeper Sofa, $322

This couch is covered in velvet and features thick cushions and armrests for the ultimate in simple luxury. The seat back has three positions for sitting up, lounging, and sleeping, and the vintage design is an added bonus. Comes in tan, blue, and gray, pictured.

16. DHP Premium Westbury Linen Pillow Top Convertible Sleeper Sofa, $224

This traditional futon-style sleeper features a simple, clean design. It's extra comfortable thanks to the pillow top and tufted fabric. Available in a variety of colors including white faux leather and gray, pictured.

There are, of course, many more sleeper sofas and sofa beds out there. Check out the rest of the Houzz collection here
