OVERHEARD: Bedbugged landlord

By Teri Karush Rogers| October 15, 2010 - 12:17PM

"As a landlord I find these [bed bug disclosure] laws ridiculous. To combat them I now require every new tenant to sign a statement swearing they have not lived in an apartment with bedbugs in the last year," writes a landlord on The Real Deal's website.  "If they say that they have I automatically decline the application. If they say they haven't and they move in and subsequently bed-bugs are found in their apartment I will call their old landlord to see if any extermination was done in the unit. If they lied in their statement I will remediate the bedbugs and take them to court for damages/legal fees."  Hmm. Sounds like it's time to include 'bed bug survivor' as a protected class under the city's antidiscrimination laws.  (The Real Deal)
