If you’re looking for an apartment to rent in New York City, it’s always a good idea to check out a place in person to make sure it matches the listing photos. That’s because if you like the place, you can apply on the spot and size up your competition in case there’s a bidding war.

But these days, the rental market is less frenzied, so you won’t face the same crowds (and long lines) seen at open houses this summer. Still it’s always a good idea to be prepared to fill out an application on the spot. In order to do so, you need to bring copies of documents like your ID and bank statements.

Keep in mind, when planning to see apartments in person many open houses are by appointment only, so you’ll have to sign up in advance.

To help with your search, here are five one bedrooms for rent for under $4,000 with upcoming open houses in Flatbush, Park Slope, Clinton Hill, Long Island City, and Kips Bay.
