Looking for an apartment in Queens? You should consider the impact of airplane noise as part of your apartment search here.

That’s because roughly one in 10 homes on the market in Queens is on a potentially loud flight path, according to new analysis by real estate search site Localize.city, which flags apartments that experience excessive airplane noise. The company recently added apartment listings to its website.

Queens is home to 16 of the top 20 neighborhoods with the most airplane sound. The neighborhoods of Brookville, Howard Beach, and Flushing had the highest percentage of homes for rent and for sale (96 percent, 88 percent and 66 percent, respectively) that experience excessive airplane noise, according to the survey.

Mott Haven in the Bronx and Manhattan’s East Harlem also made the list. The Bronx ranked second, with more than 3 percent of its apartments on the market exposed to airplane noise.

Localize.city analyzed all sales and rental listings available on its search platform as of June 6, 2019 along with 2017 noise impact data from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and 2014-2017 complaint data obtained from the Port Authority through a FOIL request.

“Queens, home to two major airports, unsurprisingly has the largest share of homes on the market plagued by airplane noise,” says Kessem Meir, a data scientist at Localize.city. Residents of adjacent neighborhoods suffer as well to some degree. While people have different noise tolerance levels, "you can now know the tradeoffs ahead of time," she says.

Older, louder planes are being phased out, but the number of flights is expected to increase at these airports, the report says.
