Space vs. privacy is one of the fundamental tradeoffs New Yorkers have to grapple with when looking for an apartment. To get a fuller picture of the considerations involved, we asked five New Yorkers which they would choose, if presented with the stark choice of living alone in a studio apartment or renting a big place with a bunch of roommates. Here's what they had to say.

Going solo

“I'd rather live in a studio by myself. I like to think of my home as somewhere to decompress after long days spent with people, and that's much easier to do when I have a space to myself."—Samantha Sobers, Soho

A quiet home is a happy home

“I would rather live in a studio by myself, because I need my space and privacy. It's so much nicer to come home to peace and quiet when you've been living in the noisy city for the rest of the day.”—Christine Park, Greenwich Village

A door to shut

“Once I shut the apartment door behind me, I just want to be to myself. I’d definitely sacrifice size to have my cozy me time (and sing opera in the shower).”—Grace Moon, East Village

Achieving (personal) world peace

“As much as I enjoy the company of my friends, I would rather live in a studio by myself. I need that one place where I can always have peace and quiet.”—Courtney Dodge, East Village

An anchor in the storm

“I would definitely rather live in a studio by myself. I don’t always hate being around large amounts of people, but I’d rather have a calm place to call my own.” Christopher Reginald, East Village

The verdict: It's unanimous. Space doesn’t matter as much to these apartment dwellers as peace and quiet. Funnily enough, no one mentioned rent...
