6 suburban houses less than 50 minutes from NYC—and less than the cost of a Manhattan apartment

For most New Yorkers considering moving to the suburbs, the train commute time into the city is a major factor in choosing which neighborhood to go for. Here we've found six houses for sale in three New York City-area 'burbs for less than the median price of Manhattan co-op ($794,000, according to Douglas Elliman). Each one has a direct train commute of 50 minutes or less. And while none are huge, they're likely larger than your current apartment, and with green space to boot.

Floral Park (Long Island): This four-bedroom, two-bath Cape Cod is asking $719,000. Highlights include a large eat-in kitchen and a backyard gazebo. Plus, it's about 40 minutes to Penn Station by Long Island Rail Road from the station at the center of this village on the Queens-Nassau County line.

Floral Park (Long Island): This four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house in Floral Park clocks in at 1,344 square feet. Asking price: $619,000.

South Orange (New Jersey): This $750,000 four bedroom house with three full baths and two half baths has a large front and back yard and is close to the sprawling South Mountain Reservation park. The commute, via New Jersey Transit, is scheduled at about 35-45 minutes during rush hour.

South Orange (New Jersey): If a more modern style is your thing, this $775,000 three bedroom, two bath has a 2,000-square-foot patio and has been completely renovated inside, according to the listing.

Pelham (Westchester): This colonial-style $689,000 four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath cottage has a backyard, an elevated deck, and a walk-out basement that looks partially if not fully finished. The New Haven line Metro-North train station is about a mile away, and rush-hour trains run into Grand Central in about 35 minutes.

Pelham (Westchester): This three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath Colonial has a large screened-in porch and a nook in the kitchen for that morning cup of coffee. There's a fireplace, too. Asking price: $719,000.
