The Berkshires, in western Massachusetts, is known for its year-round outdoor activities like hiking and skiing—plus farm-to-table restaurants, cultural institutions and events celebrating the arts.

It’s also a great place to buy a house because you can get a lot for your money. The median sales price in Berkshire County, where you'll find popular towns like Pittsfield and Great Barrington, is $310,000, according to Zillow. And you'll find a variety of house styles in the region like cabins, Colonials, and Victorians, both old and new—all surrounded by nature.

There’s lots to do in the area for the outdoorsy types like hiking at Alford Springs and Housatonic Flats, skiing at Ski Butternut, and checking out foliage in parks like Fountain Pond State Park. For foodies, there are farm-to-table restaurants like The Old Inn on the Green and Prairie Whale.
