The purple-heavy color scheme of this 600-square-foot Upper West Side studio will definitely put off some buyers, but they’ll be missing out on a space with a lot going for it otherwise, including a separated sleeping area, a renovated kitchen, and a decorative fireplace. The apartment is a co-op at 5 Riverside Dr., and it's listed for $599,000.
It's hard to overstate how purple this place is. Not only are the walls mauve, but the overhead beams and a china cabinet appear to have have been painted to match, and the theme is consistent down to the curtains. Of course, this can all be easily remedied with a new coat of paint and some new window treatments, so in looking at the place, an imagination may come in handy, or perhaps a copy of Photoshop.
You enter the apartment through a roomy entry foyer with a pair of closets and space for a console table. The sunken living room has the ornamental fireplace, plus high beamed ceilings and herringbone floors that appear to be in good shape. The room seems large enough that the leather sectional and coffee table in the listing photo don't crowd the space.
It’s hard to get a good sense of the bed area from the photos, but the listings says that it’s queen-sized, and the floor plan indicates that it lacks a door and is windowless, which is likely why this apartment is being marketed as a studio and not a one bedroom. There’s a third closet in here, and the white walls offer a reprieve from the rest of the apartment.
The renovated kitchen subtly picks up the color scheme, with pale lavender cabinets and walls. There are stainless steel appliances, lots of cabinets, light-colored Silestone countertops, and a pretty tiled backsplash. It’s fairly tight in here, but there’s a window, which helps create an added sense of space.
The bathroom appears to be in good shape and there is a window in here too, another plus.
The apartment is in a pet-friendly co-op building across the street from Riverside Park and three blocks from the 72nd Street 1, 2, and 3 station. It has a full-time doorman, a live-in super, central laundry, storage, a bike room, and recently renovated hallways. Maintenance is $980 a month.
