Small Wonder

The next best thing to a castle? Perhaps this studio in a historic UWS building

Consider this a rare opportunity to buy into one of the city's most historic buildings, and at a relative bargain, too: A studio is on the market for $599,000 in 455 Central Park West, the castle-like Manhattan Valley building that was once home to John Jacob Astor's New York Cancer Hospital.

In recent years, the building has been made over as a full-service condo, with amenities including valet parking, a children's play area, a garden, and a fitness center that includes a sauna and lap pool. And check out those stately exteriors:

As for the apartment itself, the arched windows add an interesting architectural element, while the kitchen is gilded with new appliances (including a dishwasher), and "custom cherry wood cabinetry." (More generally, we're liking the-all-wood everything aesthetic—an unusual choice compared to the never-ending stream of spare, white kitchens on the market.) There are also two large closets, and more storage space available in the building as well.

The building is pet-friendly as well, but take note: You and your furry friend won't be able to move in right away—a tenant is in place until February 2017, which could be an upside if you're looking to make a little income on your investment right off the bat.
