Escape pick of the week

Buy one of these suites in Martha's Vineyard and you might run into the Obamas (and make rental income on the side, too)

Martha's Vineyard, that Obama family-approved vacation spot, is one of those picture-perfect areas that feels plucked straight from a postcard. And now there's an opportunity to buy two units at Captain’s Cottages at Harbor View, a limited collection of fully serviced, fully deeded cottage suites at an historic, 125-year-old Harbor View hotel in Edgartown, Massachusetts. Both condos have recently received price cuts.

The Captain Collins Cottage 23 (shown above, and in the main photo at the top) is a 515-square-foot unit with one bedroom and one bath, and is now priced at $630,000 (it was originally $675,000).

At 679 square feet, the Captain Huxford Cottage 93 has two bedrooms and two baths and is priced at $789,000 (originally $915,000). The living room photos are below.

The homes come with a one-year membership to the Boathouse, a private club with world-class amenities, including access to a fleet of crewed luxury motor yachts, a full-service spa, private dining at the Boathouse Restaurant, tennis courts with adult and junior clinics and programs, a 4,500-square-foot family pool and separate lap pool, a fitness center, fitness classes, personal trainers, squash courts and more.

There's also landscaping, daily housekeeping, and room service available, in addition to new pools and cabanas. There's a dedicated owners' concierge who can arrange complimentary transfers to and from the airport and ferry, in-room massages and private chef services. Owners also get VIP invitations to hotel special events; access to yoga, Pilates classes and on-site children’s programs; and a 20% dining discount at the hotel’s Lighthouse Grill, Henry’s gastropub, and North 41, a seasonal poolside bar. Family and friends benefit form a 20 percent lodging discount at the hotel.

Buyers of either cottage get a 30 percent homeowners association fee reduction for six years, and a custom kitchenette upgrade. Both units can be rented out when they're not being used (which is likely often if you live in New York City, since Martha's Vineyard is just under six hours away), and Harbor View has a managed rental program in place.

The price is steep, yes, but how many New Yorkers can take an entire summer off? We suggest keeping it for August, when the city's at its pungiest, and renting it out for July and recoup-ing some of the costs.
