An affordable housing developer is accepting applications to buy 83 new townhouses in East New York, Brooklyn through a housing lottery. [Editor's Note: This 2018 lottery has ended. Go to Housing Connect to search for current NYC housing lotteries.]

The houses are set aside for households making $49,997-$153,790, and run from two-bedroom, single-family houses to two-family houses with three-bedroom apartments. They start at $197,500, with a 5 percent down payment required for all homes, and a household asset limit of $166,950, plus the required down payment amount.

The development is part of the larger Nehemiah Spring Creek affordable housing tract, which is supposed to total 225 houses and 1,295 apartments when completed. The complex is being constructed on vast lots on what was once a landfill next to the Gateway Center Mall, across Hendrix Creek from Starrett City. The houses are roughly a seven-minute walk from an express bus to Midtown, and a mile from the Van Siclen Avenue 3 station.

As with rental housing lotteries, half of the homes are set aside for residents of the area (in this case, Brooklyn Community Board 5), 5 percent are reserved for municipal workers, and a smattering more for people with disabilities. Each house comes with a backyard, off-street parking, and washer-dryer and dishwasher hookups.
