Nitehawk Cinema movie buff Caryn Coleman rents in Greenpoint, dreams of film favorite The Dakota
As the senior film programmer at Williamsburg's beloved movie theater-slash-restaurant-slash-bar Nitehawk Cinema, it's fair to say Caryn Coleman knows a thing or two about movies. And given that much of the writer and curator's work has focused on horror, it's no surprise that her dream building in New York is none other than the Dakota, the historic Upper West Side setting of Rosemary's Baby. For now, Coleman is content to reside in the less-creepy locale of Greenpoint. For this round of Due Diligence we caught up with her about her whirlwind three-day apartment search, favorite spots in the city, and more:
1. What neighborhood do you live in?
Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
2. Is this your dream neighborhood or is there someplace else in NYC you’d prefer to settle in?
The only other place I would rather live would be in the Dakota.
3. Do you own or rent?
Rent.
4. How’d you find it?
My husband and I moved from London and had only three days to find an apartment. We hustled by looking at 15 apartments in one day and found our place through a realtor recommended by a friend.
5. What’s the one thing you love the most about it?
That it's the place I'll always remember as where I first brought my son home.
6. If there’s one thing you could change about your apartment, what would it be?
Laundry!
7. In three words, describe the first apartment you've ever lived in.
College, Florida, crammed.
8. Do you dream of old New York or prefer the current version?
I'm pretty okay with the current New York.
9. Tell us about the favorite apartment you’ve ever had.
My favorite apartment was a really big one-bedroom in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. I lived there for about six years and I still miss that sunny porch up on the hill.
10. And the worst?
My worst apartment was a one-bedroom with a crooked staircase that I shared with my best friend in college. Still, it was pretty damn great.
11. Name one NYC service you couldn’t live without.
Wash-and-fold.
12. What's your favorite spot in the city?
The New York Public Library.
13. Which would you rather: Brooklyn brownstone or a penthouse in a shiny, new condo?
Brooklyn brownstone.
14. If you could live elsewhere, where would it be?
In Italy, by the sea.
15. Any advice for a recent New York transplant?
Take note that the city actually does sleep.
