Stylish and practical, sliding barn doors add a touch of rural chic to big city homes

More stylish than a wall and more interesting than a pocket door, sliding barn doors are an innovative way to infuse a city home with a little country feel. What's more, they allow for the creation of rooms (and privacy) where a traditional wall isn't desired and are a clever way to close off a room when layout is tight and typical swinging doors would take up too much space. Finally, as these homes prove, they just look way cool.

Two windowed barn doors create a unique sliding wall that separates the state-of-the-art kitchen from the beamed-ceiling living room of this three-story, three-bedroom, two-bath co-op townhouse at 28 Old Fulton Street (priced at $3.195 million) on the border of DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights.

At this two-bedroom, two-bath condo at 225 15th Street in Park Slope (yours for $999,000), a custom sliding barn door divides the second bedroom from the rest of the apartment, while also adding a rustic design element to the otherwise modern, white space.

The red barn wood wall of this 4,000-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath condo at 88 Franklin Street (on the market for $8,200,000) is set on tracks and divides the den from the rest of the loft. Slide the door open to enlarge the living space or slide it shut to create a cozy space for reading or screen-time activities.
