It's an age-old debate that probably only New York City's denizens can relate to and commiserate about: Would you rather have a dishwasher, or a washer/dryer? Here's how 6 random New Yorkers responded.

  • Dishwasher Dishwasher for sure. We have a laundry room in the basement and it’s a short trip in the elevator. It’s a small building and I never have trouble getting a machine. However, I hate doing dishes. Period. Even with just three people in the house, there’s a constant stream of dishes, cups and cutlery. Then pots, chopping boards, serving bowls…it’s never ending.  -Ernesto, Harlem
  • Washer/dryer That’s a tough one, especially since I come from a far away land (Princeton, NJ) where people always have both. But I’d say doing laundry is my biggest, most annoying chore. Doing laundry used to be easy and effective, meaning, the clothes would actually get clean after a wash. Now, since I go to a laundromat, I can’t soak my clothes like I used to, or do an extra rinse cycle, or even just separate colors from whites. My clothes and linens all look dingy now thanks to the cheap laundromat machines. If I had my own in-unit laundry, I’d probably spend my nights and weekends doing laundry for fun! -Alicia, Upper West Side
  • Washer/ dryer I live by myself and definitely don’t mind washing up a few dishes and cups. I do, however, seem to amass enough laundry to clothe ten people. I hate planning my weekends around having to go to the laundromat and spend hours waiting for the “good machine,” washing, drying, and then folding my clothes.  - Lila, Upper East Side
  • Dishwasher I think most people would think I am crazy to prefer a dishwasher to a washer/dryer. But I only wash clothes once a week and sometimes we can even skip a week. But everyday there are the the dishes for breakfast for four people, the pots, the baking pans. I like to cook and bake for my young sons and sometimes also their friends. Before we had a dishwasher, having guests over for dinner or to stay with us for a few days was terrible. We were always in the kitchen cleaning dishes instead of spending time with the guests! -Alexa, SoHa
  • Washer/dryer I would give anything for a washer/dryer in my apartment. I remember living in my parents' house, and just tossing my clothes into the hamper without a second thought and getting to do laundry anytime I wanted in the comfort of my own home. Now, I always think twice about what I put into the laundry. Maybe I can wear it again (and again) before it has to go into the wash? And still the pile of laundry keeps growing! I’ve skipped the gym because all my gym clothes were dirty. I’ve stopped by the Gap or Old Navy on the way home from work countless times to buy clothes for work the next day! I know I shouldn’t be so lazy, but I really, really hate going out to do my laundry. It may be cheaper at this point to send my laundry out to be done, but I don’t like the idea of somebody handling my delicates and I hate how much fabric softener and dryer sheets they use. - Chuck, Sunnyside Queens
  • Washer/ dryer Before we had the baby, my parents convinced us to move to a place that let us have a washer/ dryer. They had one very persuasive argument that involved graphic details of all sorts of messes babies and young children make. I’m really glad we listened to them because I don’t know what I would do if I had to leave the apartment to run a load of laundry at 11pm at night.  - Alice, Fort Greene

Verdict: Dishwasher: 2, Washer/Dryer: 4.
Winner: Washer/Dryer!
