Original art is beyond the reach of many New Yorkers, who lack the cash and connections to find that affordable something they like. Artsicle.com launched this week with the goal of changing that by letting wannabe collectors rent the works of emerging artists for $50 a month. There’s no limit to the rental period, you can buy the art if you like, and you can exchange works.

Membership (free-of-charge online) allows you to browse the collection by purchase price, medium, size, artist or only what’s for rent. According to Scott Carleton, a co-founder, 400 works are available now with as many as 800 searchable by next week. Unlike other Netflix-like art markets, this one targets the works of up-and-coming artists and in a range of shapes and sizes. Some sculptures and shadowboxes (suitable for hanging) are also for rent.

Artsicle will deliver pieces by courier within two weeks of ordering, Carleton said, and will pick them up when notified. You’re liable for any damage during the rental period, so keep an eye on your pets and your own budding artists with crayons.
