Animal(s) in the Ceiling

Does anyone have any experience in trying to get ride of animals that are living between the floors of their building? We hear scratching in our ceiling and think that there is an animal or animals trying to nest. We have no idea how the mystery animal is getting in and out of the building. Plus, the animal(s) never comes into any of the apartments. Any ideas!
